Our client purchased a newish farmhouse in a superb valley location. Having creatyed a wonderful garden, they turned their attention to integrating the house into the garden and creasting an equally wonderful family home.
Our job was to try to make sense of the rather perfunctory layout, increase the living space and make it a more practical and usable space.
The existing house was of good, sound and solid build, so rather than demolish, the scheme that came to fruition was a subtle rethink; replace a move the existing staircase to a new hallway connecting all floors and thus eliminating the orphaned spaces or the original. Replanning to create a series of attic bedrooms and bathrooms now viable with improved daylight and views by installing new dormer windows.
Large bay windows were added to the rear to substantially enlarge the ground floor reception rooms as well as the bedrooms above to fill them with light and garden views. A handsome entrance porch was then added to the front - to give the house a far more established and satifying presesnce.
Spacious and practical hallweays were created with aple coat/boot space or a fireplace and welcomming drink.
Other practical idetails included a new side entrance porch, outdoor dog pen, outbuildings including garaging, various new ensuite bathrooms with extraordinary marble work by the renowned craftsman James Elliot, a basement plant room that uses residual heat to double as a perfect drying and laundry room, a gun room and a wine cellar that maintans its cellar temperture naturally.
The end results is a seamlessly updated, far more practical and coordinated family home that provides a delightful focus to the gloriously landscaped gardens and its naturally setting.
