Having lived in their house for a few years, our client realised that the layout was wasn't really working. The kitchen was too small, the back rooms were gloomy and uninviting, it lacked a cloak room and cupboard space and the spare bedroom was little more than a box room.

Working closely with the landscape designer James Ogilvy, we were able to create a design that solved all those layout issues and better integrated the house with the garden, much to our client's delight.

We created a spacious new entrance extension and hall leading into a new enlarged family kitchen with a high pitched roof ceiling and skylight. With a modest extension we were able to fit in a cloak room (now beautifully decorated), flower/utility room, cupboards and the new underfloor heating system controls.

The back room issue was solved by lowering the floor level to match the rest of the house, incorporating the integral disused garage and installing large glass doors and windows at either end - one set opening out to drive side, the other to the gorgeous landscaped garden and terrace. The room is now open and inviting as controlled natural light and breeze can flood in.

Despite the planner's bizarre restrictions but at the client's suggestion, we were able to turn the box-bedroom into a characterful bedroom that overlooks the garden with adjacent pretty bathroom, shower facility and landing office space.

With landscape designer James Ogilvy, we created a secluded sun terrace and built a changing room and gym facility pool house - very much in keeping with the house and overlooking the swimming pool.

When approaching the house, you'd not really notice the difference, but as soon as you enter, the new layout is almost Tardis like, with abundant light, garden views and a pleasing logical layout that brings the house together.
